  • Cathedral of Florence

    Cathedral of Florence (Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore) showing both the bell tower and the dome. The first bricks were laid in the year 1296. Over the years construction was supervised by many architects and by 1418 only the dome was unfinished. Filippo Brunelleschi won the contract to finish the dome and developed a new construction technique that eliminated the need for a temporary wooden frame. The dome was finished in 1436.   • Sandy Hook Lighthouse

    The Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse in the United States first lite in 1764. The lighthouse survived an hour of cannon fire intend to destroy the building and deprive the British of its use during the Revolutionary War.
